Bumper Plates
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN BUMPER PLATES?
Bumper Plates have soared in popularity over the past 5 years and are referred to as Bumpers or Bumper Plates. They are predominantly used during Crossfit® and weight lifting exercises for the snatch and the clean and jerk, but they are also heavily used in power lifting routines. They should be made from high grade rubber so they withstand thousands of drops and will reduce the strain and wear on barbells and floors and should be able to withstand being repeated dropped from at least 6ft in height.
There are two types of Bumper Plates on the market:
Training Plates: This is what most people think of when they hear the word “Bumper Plate” and are the style of plate you seen in most Crossfit® boxes and gyms. When people are referring to bumper plates they are generally speaking about this style of plate.
They are the same diameter for all weight sizes which is usually around 450mm. This allows the plates to stack side by side on a barbell at the same height so the barbell will sit in a perfectly horizontal position and be well balanced prior to lifting.
The other benefit is that having them all the same diameter but increasing in width as the weight increases provides a larger surface area to disperse the energy form the drop through the plates, rather than having the barbell take the brunt of the force. This will help to protect your bars as good quality barbells are not cheap and should be cared for.
Bumpers are either colour coded per their weight or plain black and will be available in weights as follows: 5kg, 10kg, 15kg, 20kg and 25kg. You should never use the 5kg plates on their own as they are quite thin and cannot handle being dropped from height. Always pack them with at least a 10kg plate. The bigger the size the thicker the plates and the more punishment they can take.
The centre piece of all bumpers is the collar. This is a vital part of any good quality bumper plate. It should be made from stainless steel and be finished off with a curved or rounded lip or edge. This will assist during change over od the plates as the will be easier to slide them onto the barbell collar. This also helps to protect your barbells and bumpers from jamming and scratches.
Competition Plates: Also referred to as Pro Lifting Plates, Competition Bumper Plates, Pro Grade Bumpers and Premium Lifting Plates are used in all competitions and are manufactured per the International Weightlifting Federation (IWF) standards. The centre piece of these plates is solid steel core that provides greater durability for the plate. The centre core is encased in rubber to protect the plate and barbells during drops from varying heights. They can usually handle more wear and tear than the training plate style of bumper plates but do cost more buy, anywhere from 50%-150% more.
They are also 450mm in diameter but thinner as a large portion of the weight plate is made up of steel rather than rubber. This also enables more plates to be loaded onto barbells and come is 10kg, 15kg, 20kg and 25kg weights.
Quality of bumper plates
This varies dramatically from brand to brand. We only stock premium grade bumper plates. There are a lot of very poor quality bumper plates around and many of the better brands position their bumpers as being the best so they can charge consumers over inflated prices. Our bumper plates have been tested again and again and can handle heavy use in all commercial and Crossfit® applications.
One of the best ways to determine the quality of bumper plates is to use the Shore Durometer Test. This is the international standard used to test the hardness of rubber as well as other synthetic materials. Originally developed by Albert F. Shore in the 1920s, his device enabled the measurement of quality of rubber and other similar compounds.
This test will determine the materials hardness and ability to resist complete failure or at least surface indentation. Softer compound will dent easier than harder counterparts and won't handle wear and tear under extreme conditions.
