Commercial Exercise Bikes
Exercise bikes come in 3 different designs:
1. Upright Bikes 2. Recumbent Bikes 3. Spin bikes
Most fitness facilities will have a combination of all 3 of these commercial bikes.
Upright Bikes are standard model found in most fitness centres and corporate gyms. If you are going to purchase recumbent bikes then usually the ratio: is 2:1 so for every 2 upright bikes in the facility you usually require one recumbent bike.
Spin bikes are a whole different ball game. The quantity of these you require will depend on the type of fitness centre or facility they are going into. If you will be doing Spin Classes or Group training etc., then Spin Bikes are an awesome piece of equipment, (so long as they are good quality) as they are extremely robust, most models don’t have any electronics so there’s no potential issues there and they can be used for many styles of training as they have a huge variation in resistance levels.
What type of resistance is best?
Upright and Recumbent Exercise Bikes will all use a magnetic resistance or tension control. There are two types of resistance used for Upright and Recumbent Exercise bikes:
ECB (Eddy Current Braking) Tension Control: This form of tension control is achieved by passing an electric current through a magnet and creating a magnetic field between the magnet and the bike’s internal flywheel. All commercial exercise bikes should use a high quality ECB magnetic resistance system. This will provide users with a large of resistance and a smoother overall feel than inferior systems such as Electronic Tension Control system. The change in resistance levels will be a lot faster therefore minimising the delay when changing resistance levels. They also provide a more accurate and consistent resistance setting as the magnetic current works evenly, quietly and more reliably. Also this system requires less moving parts which improves the reliability of the bike.
With ECB models you can choose from either self-generating models which don’t require any external power or powered models which simply need to be plugged into a power socket. Self-generating bikes use the power generated by users pedalling during training to recharge batteries built into the bike to power the tension control and the computerised display. This design is ideal for all health clubs as they don’t require any external cables or power, which reduces potential tripping hazards associated with power leads. They are also great for the environment and reducing energy bills.
Electronic Tension Adjustment: This is a very inferior magnetic resistance system and is generally used on domestic exercise bikes. It works by using a small motor to move magnets closer to or further away from the flywheel in order to change resistance/tension levels.
What about the Console?
The console is very important. It must be easy to use, advanced enough so it has adequate programs and features but not over the top so it will be unreliable. There are generally 2 main designs on Upright and Recumbent Bikes:
a) LED Digital Displays and,
b) Touch screen display with TV, Video or other entertainment options.
Try to keep it simple. The more gimmicks the more problems.
